2018年高考考试英语北京卷有个expect后接动名词的句子:
But she expects usingthe chemical in some kind of industrial process—not simply “millions of wormsthrown on TOP of the plastic.
为何这里在expect 后面接动名词呢?英语不是要说expect to do sth 吗?为何这里的是用动名词的 expectdoing sth?
附 2018年北京卷expect后接动名词 doing的有关材料:
Humans produce morethan 300 million tons of plastic every year. Almost half of that winds up inlandfills, and up to 12million tons pollute the oceans. So far there is no effective way to get rid ofit, but a new study suggests an answer may lie in the stomachs of some hungryworms.
Researchers in Spain and England recently found that theworms of the greater wax moth can break down polyethylene, which accounts for40% of plastics. The team left 100 wax worms on a commercial polyethyleneshopping bag for 12 hours, and the worms consumed and broke down about 92milligrams, or almost 3% of it. To confirm that the worms’ chewing alone wasnot responsible for the polyethylene breakdown, the researchers made some wormsinto paste and applied it TOPlastic films. 14 hours later the films had lost 13% of their mass—apparentlybroken down by enzymes from the worms’stomachs. Their findings were published in Current Biology in 2017.
FedericaBertocchini, co-author of the study, says the worms’ ability to break downtheir everyday food—beeswax—also allows them to break down plastic. “Wax is acomplex mixture, but the basic bond in polyethylene, the carbon-carbon bond, isthere as well,” she explains. “The wax worm evolved a method or system to breakthis bond. ”
Jennifer DeBruyn, amicrobiologist at the University of Tennessee, who was notinvolved in the study, says it is not surprising that such worms can break downpolyethylene. But compared with previous studies, she finds the speed ofbreaking down in this one exciting. The next step, DeBruyn says, will be toidentify the cause of the breakdown. Is it an enzyme produced by the wormitself or by its gut microbes?
Bertocchini agreesand hopes her team’s findings might one day help employ the enzyme to breakdown plastics in landfills. But she expects using the chemical in some kind of industrialprocess—not simply “millions of worms thrown on TOP of the plastic.”
