see the elephant 也可说成 get a look / sight at the elephant，意思是长见识、开眼界。
看到了大象就等于看到了世界，就是见去世面了？由于see the elephant这句俚语诞生的年代，只有在非洲和亚洲才能看到大象，对当时的人来讲能看见大象就真的是等于是见去世面的了，算是开了眼界了。就如此，see the elephant就成了见见世面的意思了。
